PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION:
The process of gently dehydrating the placenta, grinding it into a powder, then placing the powder into capsules so the birthing parent may consume it daily. Encapsulation can only be performed on a fresh placenta. Therefore, this is not an option for those choosing to have a lotus birth. I utilize the Traditional Chinese Method of preparation which includes steaming the placenta with a blend of organic herbs/spices and using organic vegan capsules.
BENEFITS:
Consuming the placenta after birth is a global ancient practice; many indigenous cultures have various methods of preparation and rituals honoring the baby’s first home. This practice has been lost in Western society, but it is now slowly being incorporated back into our sacred birth practices.
Here is a passage from one of my favorite birth books, Placenta The Forgotten Chakra, by Robin Lim: “The vitamins and protein ease the strain of the long months of pregnancy on the mother’s body and balance her plummeting hormone levels. This organ that supports the living baby in the mother’s womb, if eaten, further supports the offspring by ensuring an adequate and flowing milk supply… Hormones are powerful; the postpartum woman, in the best of circumstances, is coping with a lot of adjustments and re-balancing in the first precious hours and days after having a baby.”
In summary, encapsulation is known to:
reduce postpartum hemorrhage
increase mother-infant bond
decrease postpartum depression (hormone balance)
increase milk supply (by replenishing nutrients)
